The first match of ICC World Cup 2019 started on May 30 between host country England and South Africa. SA won the toss and elected to bowl.
Tahir was asked to bowl the first over; this way, he became the first-ever spinner to bowl the first over during an opening match of the International Cricket Council.

In his second ball, Tahir sent England opener Johnny Bairstow packing for a golden duck. The 40-year-old's celebration reminded netizens of his CSK days that even CSK's official Twitter handle tweeted with the now trending #Nesamani hashtag.
Later in the 37th over, Tahir brought down Morgan, who was in partnership with Stokes, both hitting over 50 runs. Bringing down the captain and breaking the partnership was a crucial step as England struggled for a foothold after the wicket, losing wickets one by one after a few overs.
The internet lauded him for his magic and Harsha Bhogle tweeted saying "faf pulled out a rabbit out of the hat and it's a Tahir!!" Soon Tahir started to trend on Twitter.
