Shahidi gets back up to play after ball breaks his helmet

Afghanistan kept up their pride, giving it their all and played the whole 50 overs scoring 247 for 8 wicket loss. Hashmatullah Shahidi who made 24 runs got hit by by Mark Wood's short-pitch delivery on his head and broke his helmet at more than 145 kmph.

Though the doctors adviced him to go back to the pavillion, Shahidi got treated and asked for a new helmet and started batting. He went on to score 76 before he was finally out.

"One of the reasons I got up so quickly is because my mum is always thinking of me. I lost my father last year so I didn't want her to hurt," he said. "My whole family was watching, even my big brother was here in the ground watching. I didn't want them to be worried for me," said Shahidi regarding what made him get back up soon.

“The ICC doctors came to me, and our physios, and my helmet was broken in the middle,” Shahidi said. “They just told me ‘let’s go.’ I told them I can’t leave my teammate at that moment. My team needed me, I carried on.”

The 24-year-old batsman showcased sportsmanship and dedication that is so heartmelting and also raised questions about how well is the tournament prepared to face concussions that occurs to players.

However he is ruled out of the next game with South Africa due to concussion symptoms. However, he wasn't the first Afghan player to be injured. Star spinner Rashid Khan, who made an unwanted record of giving 110 runs in 9 overs, was bowled without scoring when he was hit by a delivery that jagged back, bounced sharply into him and deflected into the stumps against New Zealand in Afghanistan's third game, reports The Quint.
