A plea has been filed in the Madras High Court against conducting the 13th edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) between March 29 and May 24 due to the Coronavirus outbreak.
Filed by advocate Alex Benziger, the plea seeks a direction to the Central government to not allow the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to conduct the cash-rich tournament.
The plea is likely to be heard by a division bench comprising Justices MM Sundresh and Krishnan Ramaswamy on Match 12.
“As on date, as per the website of the World Health Organisation, there was no specific medicine or to prevent or to treat the COVID-19,” the petitioner said.
The petitioner further stated that the Coronavirus was spreading all over the world rapidly, creating a huge epidemic diaster.
In the wake of the disease, several sporting events, including the Italy Federation League, were being held behind closed doors.
Meanwhile, BCCI President Sourav Ganguly on Monday confirmed that the tournament will be held as per the schedule with necessary precautionary measures in place.
