Former Indian cricketer and ex-selector Dilip Vengsarkar reportedly said that MS Dhoni and former India coach Gary Kristen were once against picking Virat Kohli in the team and preferred batsman Subramaniam Badrinath. "Gary Kristen and MS Dhoni told me, 'no we haven't seen him play. Let's keep the same team going',"  he reportedly added. He further claimed he lost his job as chief selector after picking Kohli over Subramaniam Badrinath in 2008.
