News came as a shock to all cricket fans after Kane Williamson hinted that he is open to step down as New Zealand captain. Ever since they lost against Australia in the Test series by 3-0. His poor runs and performance shocked the cricketing fraternity after which the New Zealand authorities had set up a review with Williamson's captaincy.
According to NDTV sports report, during the first T20 International against India when he was asked if he is still interested in leading New Zealand; Williamson said, "For me it's always been about what is the best for the team. If those discussions are to eventuate and collectively there is a thought that it will be best for the team, then my stance is whatever right and fits the group."
"So, I'm open to whatever is good for the group and to move the team in those directions. And you want to be making good decisions. Once again, not just a personal thing but a team thing," Williamson added.
Further hinting more about his departure, Williamson said it was time for the team to move from the disappointment and focus on the India series. Soon after the loss against Australia, he was also openly criticized by former New Zealand skipper Brendon McCullum.
"Even prior to captaincy I was fortunate to somehow be in the leadership role. I do feel fortunate to be leading such a great group of guys that share a similar passion, which is to keep moving this team forward. I’m not the only one that is trying to lead that," Williamson said.
The humble Williamson also stated that there are other players who are equally talented and passionate about the team and the game. Williamson, will soon be seen leading Sunrisers Hyderabad (SH) in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2020.
