Karthik was picked in the 2019 World Cup squad as a back-up wicketkeeper for MS Dhoni, ahead of Rishabh Pant. However, Shikhar Dhawan's injury forced India to call in Pant, who got into the playing XI ahead of Karthik in the game against England.
Vijay Shankar was picked in the World Cup squad and was drafted in against Pakistan after Dhawan was injured. He was put into No 4, after Rahul was moved as an opener to replace an injured Dhawan.
However, an injury sent Shankar home ahead of the match against Bangladesh and Karthik was taken in to strengthen the middle order along with Pant.
Dinesh Karthik has posted a picture of him on Instagram with a caption saying "Waited 15 years to play my first World Cup game and I couldn’t be happier! Hello Semis, here we come!!! #cwc2019 #bleedblue"
Vijay Shankar commented on his picture saying "All the best for the rest of the games na😊"
The comment left many fans sad as Shankar just missed his chance to play and was ruled out due to injury.
Rohit Sharma has also congratulated the cricketer in the same post.
