ICC FINALLY RESPONDS TO WORLD CUP OVERTHROW CONTROVERSY

The Cricket World Cup 2019 final results didn't go down well with many, even after days of the celebrations critics and fans are still talking about the controversy that emerged due to perceived misinterpretation of rules by the on-field umpires, which resulted in them awarding England one extra run.

Soon after England won their maiden World Cup, shocked fans all across the world have questioned the rules set by International Cricket Council (ICC). After days of being silent, ICC for the very first time has reacted on the overthrow controversy.

The issue began after England's victory came to everyone's notice when former umpire Simon Taufel claimed that the host players were awarded one run extra after the ball had deflected off diving Ben Stokes' bat.

According to NDTV Sports report, an ICC spokesperson was quoted saying by forxsports.com.au that "it was against the policy to comment on any decisions (made by the umpires). The umpires take decisions on the field with their interpretation of the rules and we don't comment on any decisions as a matter of policy."

Meanwhile, five times winner of ICC’s Umpire of the Year Award, Taufel said the on-field umpires in the final, Marais Erasmus and Kumar Dharmasena, made a “clear mistake” by awarding England an extra run. “It’s a clear mistake. It’s an error of judgment,” Taufel told Foxsports.com.au. He was referring to ICC's Law 19.8 which clearly states that batsmen are awarded one run extra only if the batsmen have crossed when the fielder releases the ball.
