After Team India’s middle-order crumbled in the World Cup semi-final, ‘Number 4’ has become a matter of debate among the cricketing community. From experienced Ambati Rayudu to ‘3D’ Vijay Shankar to young Rishab Pant, the position has seen them all. While the newly appointed batting coach Vikram Rathour has forwarded a couple of names that he sees as a potential solution to the problem, star spinner Harbhajan Singh has brought an unexpected suggestion to the discussion table.
It’s none other than Kerala batsman Sanju Samson who has garnered a loyal fanbase through Indian Premier League (IPL). Samson along with India opener Shikar Dhawan added 135 runs in just 12.3 overs for India ‘A’ in the fifth and final unofficial ODI against South Africa ‘A’ at his home ground Thiruvananthapuram.
Following Samson’s stellar performance, Harbhajan lauded Samson by saying that he has good technique and a good head on his shoulders. “Why not @IamSanjuSamson at number 4 in odi.. with good technique and good head on his shoulders.. well played today anyways against SA A,” his tweet read.
Samson made his first-class debut in 2011 and has played 53 first-class and 80 List A matches so far. He was also picked for the international side once in 2015 where he scored 19 runs against Zimbabwe.
