Speculations and comments on Dhoni's future in the team is a heated topic that is being spoken about in the cricketing world now. Adding a dime to it, Gambhir has recalled how Dhoni brought in young players to the team.
Speaking about Dhoni's future in the team, Gambhir said that it is important to prepare a new wicketkeeper for the next World Cup.
He said when Dhoni was the captain, he thought about the future and told him, Sachin and Shewag that they can't play together. He added that now it is time to do the same.
Earlier last year, Gambhir Told India Today regarding his reaction when Dhoni told the decision to them. "It was a massive shock, I think it would have been a massive shock for any cricketer. I have not heard anyone be told in 2012 that they would never be a part of the 2015 World Cup. I always had the impression that if you keep scoring runs, age is a just a number."
Speaking of the present situation, “It’s important to look into the future. And when Dhoni was the skipper, he invested in the future. I remember Dhoni saying in Australia that me, Sachin and Sehwag can’t play the CB series together as the grounds were big. He wished for young players for the World Cup. It’s necessary to take practical decisions than being emotional,” Gambhir told TV9 Bharatvarsh.
“And it’s time to groom the youngsters. Be it Rishabh Pant, Sanju Samson, Ishan Kishan or any other wicketkeeper, whoever is believed to have the potential should be made the wicket-keeper. Give him chances for one and half-years and if he doesn’t perform, then others should be tried out as well. Then one would get to know who the keeper for the next World Cup is,” he added.
