English umpire John Williams passed away in hospital a month after he was hit by a ball during an amateur match. The 80-year-old man was from from Hundleton, Pembrokeshire in Wales.
He was struck with a ball during a Pembrokeshire County Division 2 match between Pembroke and Narbeth on July 13.
He was then taken to a hospital in Cardiff where he was placed in induced coma. On August 1, he was shifted to another hospital in Haverfordwest where he passed away.
Robert Simons from Narberth Cricket Club, who was the other umpire in the match said, "I was officiating as the other umpire ... It was traumatic. He was a grand gentleman, truly a gent from a cricketing point of view, and he gave up a tremendous amount of his time for the sport."
This sure brings the discussion of how umpires are put in danger with such incidents of ball or players hitting umpires by mistake happen.
