RBI Governor Urjit Patel on Wednesday reportedly suggested a merger of all the public sector banks of India. Delivering a lecture at the Columbia University, Patel reportedly said: "It is not clear that we need so many public sector banks”. He also said that the merger would help in dealing with the problem of stressed assets. Notably, SBI merged with five associate banks on April 1.
