Supporting the crackdown on unlicensed slaughterhouses in Uttar Pradesh, Commerce Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Wednesday said cow protectionism was the "spirit" behind the country's freedom movement. Sitharaman said this while responding to a debate in the Lok Sabha over the matter of availability of animal skin for the leather industry in the wake of the ban on cow slaughter.
