The opposition is likely to propose the name of former diplomat Gopalkrishna Gandhi as the potential candidate for the July 17 presidential election. Sources reportedly said the Congress and the Left parties are pushing for Mahatma Gandhi’s grandson for the country’s highest post. Union ministers, Rajnath Singh and M Venkaiah Naidu, are expected to meet Congress chief Sonia Gandhi on Friday as BJP is trying to build consensus for its candidate. The 71-year-old Gandhi is a retired IAS officer and former governor of Bengal.
