After continuous protests all over the state demanding amendment in the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, the Jallikattu event, planned to be conducted in Alanganallur, has been cancelled. Though emergency Jallikattu ordinance was signed by President of India and promulgated by Governor of Tamil Nadu, protestors at Alanganallur rejected it saying they want a permanent amendment to the law, so that Jallikattu can be conducted every year. According to reports, Chief Minister O Panneerselvam had reached Madurai late on Saturday to start off the bull taming sport.
