S.P Velumani, Minister of municipal administration has reportedly said that the proposed multi-level car park at T Nagar will be ready in 18 months. The car park was proposed with the notion of alleviating the congestion in the busy shopping area of T Nagar and providing adequate parking spots for huge number of shoppers that throng the area.

According to reports, a youth named Ranjith was killed by two men on a bike on January 19 near Valluvarkottam. Based on the CCTV footage found in the area, Nungambakkam police have arrested the duo, identified as Karthikeyan and Naveen Kumar. Ranjith ran to escape when the duo tried to snatch his cell phone. The victim was stabbed in his neck and ran for his life. CCTV footage shows Ranjith running with his neck stabbed, while the two men chase him on a bike.

The probe panel headed by justice Rajeswaran to inquire the Jallikattu issue has reportedly said that music director, actor Hiphop Aadhi, Karthikeya Sivasenathipathy will be inquired. A petition has been filed in Supreme Court to reconsider the judgment that was passed on Jallikattu last year.

School Education Department secretary Pradeep Yadav reportedly announced that 10th and 12th educational certificates can be verified online. Reports say, specific departments including the police department, district collectorate and passport department will be given access.

A car reportedly caught fire while filling petrol at a bunk near Adyar on Friday. Reports say, the accident occurred when smoke suddenly started emanating from the bonnet of the car and it caught fire; the petrol bunk employees immediately rushed the car out of the bunk where the car burned down. Fire tenders rushed to the spot and contained it immediately.

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Eddapadi Palaniswami reportedly opened 964 apartments in Vyasarpadi on Friday. Reports say, Rs 122.80 crore was spent in the construction of the buildings under Murthingar Theru Project. Also, 464 apartments were built in Tondiarpet at a cost of Rs 38.39 crore.

The Metro rail work between Nehru Park and Chennai Central has reportedly been completed. Similarly, the underground metro work between Nehru Park-Chennai Central and Saidapet-DMS has also concluded. Reports say, the services along these routes will begin from March, this year.

According to a report on New Indian Express, a 40-year-old man from Tamil Nadu was arrested on Wednesday night after he groped a popular Malayalam actress Sannusha. The incident happened when the actress was traveling in train at around 1:00 pm in the Mangaluru-Thiruvananthapuram Maveli Express.

Kamal Haasan who was traveling to the US met reporters in Chennai airport. He said he was happy that the farmers became visible to the centre. However, he said that the budget has not done any good to the middle-class people.

According to a report in The Hindu, in the academic year 2017-2018, as much as 110 self-financing engineering colleges have registered only 30% students and in 20 colleges, less than 10 students were admitted in the engineering courses. This means that as much as 1.11 lakh engineering seats in Tamil Nadu are remaining vacant. The total number of engineering institutions including Anna University affiliated colleges, self-financing colleges, government-aided and government colleges is 586. The total number of sanctioned intake in these colleges is 2,64,651 and the total number of students admitted is 1,52,704.

With the Finance Minister Arun Jaitley’s announcement about the allocation of funds to build escalators at railway stations that have more than 25,000 commuters per day, few of Chennai’s suburban railway networks are expected to get escalators. Avadi, Guindy, Pazhavanthangal, Chrompet, Chengalpattu, Arakkonam, Thiruvallur are the stations in Tamil Nadu that are expected to get escalators.

The Union Budget 2018-19, presented by Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley on Thursday, was a disappointment for Tamil Nadu as it didn’t touch on the State’s big-ticket expectations. The state was looking forward to the sanction for Phase II of the Chennai Metro Rail and a decision on the location of an All India Institute of Medical Sciences.

Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley, in the Union Budget on Thursday, announced that modern trainsets with state-of-the-art amenities and features will be commissioned this fiscal. It is also notable that the trainsets are being designed at the Integral Coach Factory in Perambur, Chennai. All railways stations with more than 25,000 footfall would have escalators and CCTVs and Wi-Fi facilities would also be set up, Jaitley said.

A class XII student reportedly set herself on fire by using kerosene in Kancheepuram on Wednesday. Reports say, the girl decided to take the extreme step as she was frustrated by the constant quarrel between her parents. She was immediately rushed to a nearby hospital and was later shifted to Kilpauk Medical Hospital where she is currently receiving treatment.

In a tweet, actor Kamal Haasan conveyed his condolences to the family of Thagadoor Gopi, the founder of HiGopi who developed codes to transliterate English to Tamil online. Chennai doctors became the first-ever to successfully perform a surgery in which they removed a huge tumour on the right side of a boy's face. Reports say, the college student from West Bengal had been undergoing treatment for the past four years and was admitted to Lima Lifeline Hospital in Chennai last November. The student underwent an 8-hour surgery last December and his doctors on Wednesday said that he had recovered with very less marks on his face.

Railway police in Chennai reportedly warned students against showing off weapons in public places. This warning comes following the incident on Monday when four students were arrested for causing ruckus by dragging weapons in Patravakkam railway station. Notably, a similar incident also took place a few months ago where nine students were arrested. Police further stated that students arrested under such cases will be denied passport and conduct certificate.

Three students were reportedly arrested in relation to the murder of a boy in Chintadripet railway station on Thursday. The second-year student at a government college was murdered while he was on his way to college on January 29. Thiruvanmiyur police have reportedly arrested three students of the same college and registered a case under seven different sections on them.

Following the launch of ‘mPassport’ app by Chief Minister Edappadi Palaniswami, the training session for police personnel began on Wednesday. Reports say, this process will make the police verification faster and reduce the number of days for receiving passport by ten days. The initiative has been started in Chennai and is expected to begin in Coimbatore and Madurai soon.

Higher education minister K. P. Anbalagan reportedly clarified that engineering admissions in the upcoming academic year will be conducted online and students will not be required to go to Anna University for counselling.  He further added that the chances of introducing the proposed common engineering exam are highly unlikely.

According to reports, a 6-year-old girl was sexually assaulted and her body was burnt in Keelathattaparai near Thoothukudi district. Reports suggest that she was strangled to death and her body was burnt using kerosene. Police have been looking for a 14-year-boy in connection with the case, reports added.

A 35-year-old man, identified as Guna reportedly thrashed nine mongrel puppies to death. A resident of the area was quoted as saying that "On Sunday, he had come drunk and found the puppies crying when he allegedly beat them to death. However, on Monday, when the residents were shocked about the incident, Guna did not react to it." The Sankar Nagar police station has filed an FIR against Guna who is currently absconding. The police have launched a search for him.

S.Sreesanth, the former Indian pacer has moved the Supreme Court challenging the Kerala High Court’s judgment which barred his involvement in all cricket related activities conducted by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). DMK chief M Karunanidhi has reportedly been admitted at a hospital in Teynampet on Wednesday. According to reports, the veteran leader has been admitted as he suffered severe tooth pain. Reports added that Karunanidhi returned home after treatment and doctors had insisted that he is in good health. 

The Chennai Metro Rail has decided to increase the frequency of trains during peak hours (from 8:30 AM to 10:30 AM and from 5:00 to 8:30 PM) between Shenoy Nagar and St. Thomas Mount from February 1 onwards. The frequency of trains during peak hours has been increased from one every ten minutes to one every seven minutes.

According to reports, 7 days of salary has been cut for the Tamil Nadu transport corporation employees who held a strike demanding a pay hike. The decision has been made by the managing directors of 8 transport corporations, say reports. The Tamil Nadu government during the strike had told that the salaries of the employees will not be cut if they withdraw their strike.

38-year-old Sathish, a former policeman, was arrested for sexually assaulting the daughter of his landlord in Thiru Vi Ka Nagar. The mother of the girl, who is a college student, filed a complaint with Peravallur all women’s police station on Monday. Reports suggest that Sathish was suspended from post due to unknown reasons. Sathish was separated from his wife and two children following arguments and was living in Thiru Vi Ka Nagar, say reports.

The Madras High Court on Tuesday adjourned indefinitely the hearing in the Gutkha scam involving Tamil Nadu minister, Director General of Police and former police commissioner. All the parties involved submitted their arguments in written petitions as ordered by the court earlier. Accepting their petitions, the bench consisting of Chief Justice Indira Banerjee and Justice Abdul Quddhose adjourned the hearing in the case indefinitely. DMK MLA J Anbazhagan filed the petition seeking a CBI inquiry into the matter.

After the incident in which a 24-year-old tailor landed on a 4-year-old girl from the fourth floor of a building, the girl is reportedly critical. The man escaped with minor injuries and fled the spot. It is still unclear whether the man attempted suicide or he accidentally fell down. The girl and her grandfather were reportedly going to a departmental store, which is located on the ground floor of the building when the incident happened.

A new species of reptile, a rock-dwelling gecko (a type of lizard) has reportedly been found in the Megamalai Wildlife Sanctuary in Tamil Nadu by the group of researchers. The gecko grows to an average length of 20 centimeters and is found only in the Megamalai Wildlife Sanctuary.

The Koyambedu vegetable market saw a steep fall in vegetable prices on Tuesday. This was a result of the excessive rains that Tamil Nadu had received during the northeast monsoon. The mother of a newlywed woman who died under mysterious circumstances poured kerosene over herself and attempted self-immolation in front of the Tirunelveli District Collector’s office, alleging that no investigation into her daughter’s death was done by the police. Anna University reportedly announced the semester exam dates for students studying in affiliated colleges. According to a notification released by the University, exams for 2017-2018 batch BE, BTech and BArch students is scheduled from May 16 to May 30, while semester exams for second, third and final-year students will begin on April 23 and end on May 4.

According to a Puthiya Thalaimurai report, a woman injected poison and killed two of her children and later committed suicide in Erode, on Monday. Reports say, the woman's husband passed away a few years ago and she had a 4-year-old son while another son was studying in class three. Police suspect, the woman decided to take this extreme step after her lover recently decided to marry another woman.

A report in The Hindu states that members of the Tamil Nadu State Commission for Women are set to visit women prisons across the state in a phased manner to evaluate prevailing conditions of inmates and will present a comprehensive report highlighting the same. The report further added that concerns such as safety and other issues will be taken up.

As per a report in The Hindu, Dravidar Kazhagam president K Veeramani was quoted as saying that the party will organise a statewide protest against the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (NEET) on February 5. NEET, ever since it was announced, has been a subject of controversy, and things took a heart-wrenching turn when Ariyalur native S Anitha, all of just 17 years of age, took the extreme step to commit suicide in September 2017, after she was dejected for not being able to procure a medical seat since the new NEET norms kicked in for that academic year.

In a move that could be beneficial to the general public, the Greater Chennai Corporation has ordered all fuel stations in the city to let people use their restrooms for free, according to The Hindu. The report further added that a number of petrol pumps deny entry to washrooms saying that is used by their own employees or collect money to use the same.

Sunday saw Coimbatore hosting Jallikattu for the first time in 38 years, reports the Deccan Chronicle. The event was held near L&T bypass at Chettipalayam and drew the attention of tens of thousands of spectators. The report further added that 500 bulls and 550 tamers participated in the event.

After police stopped a duo who were racing on Kamarajar Salai in Chennai on Sunday, they were shocked to find their microphones missing. The police constables Kasinathan and Parthiban were reportedly informed about racing on the Marina road when they were patrolling. They found two youths and were enquiring them when they stole the cops’ mike. Reportedly, the youths were annoyed as they were questioned.

Communal violence took an ugly turn in Uttar Pradesh's Kashganj district with 112 people being arrested and security being intensified on Sunday. In a shocking incident, a 32-year-old youth died on Monday at around 6:30 am as he fell off a flyover at Chennai airport. The youth has been identified as Chaitanya Vuyuru from Vijayawada, who is working in an IT company in Chennai. According to CCTV footages, the man was trying to take a selfie and slipped off the flyover.

A 70-year-old man from Thiruvallur reportedly died on Saturday night as he failed to put off the cigarette that he was smoking. The man, after consuming alcohol reportedly smoked while lying on his bed. As he slept off before putting the cigarette off, his bed caught fire. When his neighbours noticed smoke and fire, they called the ambulance and fire service, who recovered the man's dead body. The man’s body was taken for postmortem.

To protest against the bus fare hike, the members of DMK including the DMK working president MK Stalin started their protest early in the morning. Since their protest was not permitted, MK Stalin was arrested in DMK's constituency Kolathur.

In an attempt to make travel easy for nearly 2,000 people, the Chennai Metro Rail Limited will reportedly start the construction of a foot overbridge near Alandur station. It will take about six to eight months for the completion of the work and is estimated to cost about Rs 6 crore. Reportedly, there will be lifts and escalators for the overbridge.

Two girls studying Class XI in a private school in Kancheepuram reportedly went missing on Saturday. Parents of the schoolgirls alleged that their daughters might have taken this decision after they were mistreated by teachers in the school. Reports say, police have registered a case and are investigating the matter with the help of CCTV footages installed in the school.

The security guards at Tamil Nadu Agricultural University Botanical Garden in Coimbatore are reportedly seeking marriage proof for entry of couples in the park. Reports say, hindered by couples using the park as hiding spots, the officials decided to impose this rule and restrict the entry of unmarried couples. However, officials have claimed that the park is primarily used for research purposes due to which they have restricted entry.

Following the murder of a 48-year-old woman near Annanur in Coimbatore on Friday, a special team formed to investigate the murder has released photos of the accused. Reports say, the identified accused aged between 18 and 25 escaped with eight sovereign gold jewellery and Rs 1 lakh in cash after murdering the woman. Photos have been released to avoid the escape of these accused.

In a wedding party at Teynampet, DMK working president MK Stalin said that ‘Kalavani’ means a person who robs and ‘Purambokku’ has to be taken in a political way. He reportedly said that the late CM Jayalalithaa has also used the word ‘Kalavani’ in the Parliament also. The DMK leader had earlier used those terms against BJP which sparked controversy.

According to reports, the fare for MTC bus tickets has been reduced by Re 1. The minimum charge for tickets has been reduced to Rs 4 from Rs 5 and the maximum price has been reduced to Rs 22 from Rs 23. The revised rates will be implemented on Monday.

Stray dogs reportedly mauled a deer to death in Chennai’s IIT campus on Thursday. A black buck which is an endangered species was also killed by stray dogs recently on Monday. Reports say, between November 15 and December 17, 2017, eleven deer including a black buck died in IIT-Madras campus.

According to a Puthiya Thalaimurai report, actor Rajinikanth is planning to hold meets with farmers unions to understand their needs and form a new team to resolve their problems. Reports say, the actor is planning to focus more on providing education and work opportunities under his leadership. Notably, actor Rajinikanth announced his political entry on December 31, 2017.

Two men who tried to cheat by posing as family of deputy Chief Minister O Panneerselvam at Krishnagiri district were reportedly arrested and jailed on Friday. According to a Deccan Chronicle report, 32-year-old Arumugam and 23-year-old Tamil Thendral tried to cheat the personal secretary of a collector seeking a government job for a woman and even threatened him of dire consequences claiming the latter was the son of OPS. After the fraud by them came to light, a case was registered and they were arrested on Friday.

According to reports, a police team from Chennai identified and nabbed two members of a gang attempting to transport fake currency at Tiruvottiyur railway station, on Friday. Reports say, based on a tip-off, police chased and arrested the two men at gunpoint for allegedly carrying counterfeit notes worth Rs 4 lakh and five Indian pistols. Three other members of the gang were later arrested on Saturday.

According to reports, children under the age of five will be provided with pulse polio vaccine across Tamil Nadu from Sunday. Reports say, the first round of polio immunisation will begin on January 28 while the second round will begin on March 11. Notably, polio awareness campaigns are being conducted across the state to educate people about the importance of this vaccination for children below five years of age.

Actor Kamal Haasan on Saturday addressed students at a private engineering college in Chennai and answered their questions. Stating that people should not relinquish their freedom to think, the actor added that they should think of social transformation. Further, adding that it’s not a government’s job to sell liquor, Kamal said the government should focus on education and health of the people. He also asserted that students should come forward and learn politics. Alleging that people create controversies when there is, in fact, no controversy, Kamal Haasan came down strongly against Karni Sena activists who attacked a bus carrying school children. Kamal also emphasized that there is no controversy surrounding the film, and people are not angry after watching the film.

பேருந்துக் கட்டண உயர்வை எதிர்த்து தமிழ்நாடு முழுவதும் தி.மு.க இன்று ஆர்ப்பாட்டத்தில் ஈடுபட்டது. தி.மு.க செயல் தலைவர் மு.க.ஸ்டாலின்  தலைமையில் நடைபெற்ற இப்போராட்டத்தில் ம.தி.மு.க, கம்யூனிஸ்ட் உள்ளிட்ட கூட்டணிக்கட்சி தலைவர்களும் கலந்து கொண்டு தங்களது எதிர்ப்பைத் தெரிவித்தனர்.

இந்த நிலையில் தி.மு.க-வினர் தாம்பரத்தில் நடத்திய போராட்டத்தில் நடிகர் உதயநிதி ஸ்டாலின் பங்கேற்று, கையில் கருப்புக்கொடி ஏந்தி அரசுக்கு எதிராக கோஷங்கள் எழுப்பினார். 

இந்த போராட்டம் குறித்து உதயநிதி ஸ்டாலின் கூறுகையில் " இனி அடிக்கடி தி.மு.க போராட்டங்களில் என்னைப் பார்க்கலாம்" என கருத்து தெரிவித்துள்ளார்.

தொண்டர்களுடன், தொண்டராக இந்தப் போராட்டத்தில் கலந்து கொண்டுள்ள உதயநிதி, முதன்முறையாக தி.மு.க கட்சியின் கொடியை ஏந்தி போராட்டக்களத்தில் இறங்கியுள்ளார் என்பது குறிப்பிடத்தக்கது.

Stating that the godmen are spiritual legends, Radhakrishnan reportedly said they don’t know things like stone pelting and Soda bottle throwing.

DMK working president MK Stalin’s son Udhayanidhi on Saturday participated in the agitation against the hike in the bus fare, organised across Tamil Nadu by the party. The Kollywood star, during the agitation in Tambaram, was seen chanting slogans against the AIADMK government for increasing the bus fares. Earlier, he had stated that he would contest elections on behalf of DMK if he was offered an assembly seat.

Tamil Nadu’s opposition party DMK has been holding strong agitations across Tamil Nadu against the AIADMK government’s move to hike the bus fares. Party’s working president MK Stalin participated in the agitation held in Chepauk, while party’s Rajya Sabha MP Kanimozhi spearheaded the agitation near the Chennai collectorate. Other DMK allies also took part in the agitation.

While demanding the TN BJP leader H Raja and Vijayendra Saraswathi to be arrested, the Metur wing of Dravidar Kazhagam Party members reportedly held a protest. What made it more controversial was that the members dressed up like H Raja and Vijayendra while holding the protest. Vijayendra Saraswathi, during a book release event, did not stand up when the Tamil anthem was played and this incident received criticism from various party members.

Tamil Nadu BJP unit president Tamilisai Soundararajan on Friday took a dig at the state government’s decision to hike the bus fares. Earlier, people took buses to go to work to earn money, Tamilisai said, adding that now people need to go to work to pay bus fares, say reports. After hoisting the national flag at the party office on Friday, Tamilisai reportedly said the state parties are trying to create problems by taking language issues.

According to reports, a 10-feet long crackdown was witnessed in Anna Salai near Teynampet in Chennai during the Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) works. Reports suggest that the crackdown occurred following a mudslide when the works for CMRL underground tunnels were going on. Transportation was interrupted in one way near DMS, say reports.

Rajya Sabha MP from DMK, Kanimozhi, has reportedly said that the BJP can’t grow as long as its national secretary H Raja is in the party. Speaking to reporters at Chennai airport, Kanimozhi slammed that the BJP leader is stooping too low by adapting to low-standard criticisms. H Raja is a disgrace to Tamil Nadu, India and BJP, Kanimozhi reportedly said.

Narayanan Thirupathy, who represents BJP in public debates, has said that the recent controversial speech by lyricist Vairamuthu on Aandal is a planned conspiracy. In an interview with Behindwoods, Narayanan said that it is a common religious belief that Aandal is an incarnation of God. When they say “Aandal lived and died as Devadasi”, they trivialise the belief that Aandal is a God, he alleged referring to the research, cited by Vairamuthu.

A steam engine train is operated from Chennai Egmore to Kodambakkam on the occasion of Republic Day, say reports. According to reports, the 163-year-old train is operated in the route to remember the train’s heritage. Top railway officials, including the southern railway general manager, travelled on the train, reports added.

According to reports,  the cab driver who set himself ablaze on January 24 died on Friday. The 21-year-old, Manikandan, immolated self in full public view after a verbal duel with traffic police over spot fine for allegedly not fastening his seat belt. The man allegedly felt agitated as he was questioned in front of the public.

According to a TOI report, the Airports Authority of India (AAI) is considering a 1500 acre land at Maduranthakam in Kancheepuram district for Chennai’s second airport. Notably, Sriperumbudur was the location earlier considered by AAI. However, the Sriperumbudur location did not clear the complete process.

V Nanammal, a 98-year-old Coimbatore-based woman has been awarded the Padma Shri for her achievements in yoga and contributions to society by spreading knowledge about yoga. She currently teaches yoga to more than 100 students from different walks of life and age groups.

Kamal Haasan congratulated music director Ilayaraja on winning the Padma Vibhushan through a tweet where he stated that Ilayaraja’s victory has brought pride to the award and to Tamil Nadu.
