A 16-year-old girl was harassed by police during interrogation when she tried to file a complaint of molestation in Uttar Pradesh.
Her brother had shot the video of the incident on phone. In the video, the head constable, who initially refused to file an FIR, harasses the girl, reports NDTV.
"Why are you wearing a ring? Why are you wearing a ring and this necklace? Itne item kisliye daale ho (Why wear so many 'items'? You don't study. So much jewellery, why are you wearing it? What's the use of these? This just shows what you really are...," said the police.
He even snaps back at her parents asking if they don't go back home to see what the girl does. Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi tweeted the video of the incident and condemned it.
"This is how they behave with a girl who has come to file a molestation report. On one hand, there is no let-up in crimes against women in Uttar Pradesh, and on the other hand, this is the conduct of those who are supposed to protect the law," she tweeted in Hindi. Now, the head constable was removed. FIR was filed after the video went viral. Uttar Pradesh police say that they are investigating and will take further action on him if required.
Sadly, this reflects the state of the public mind as they shame and accuse the victim asking "What was she wearing" rather than understanding the base of the problem.
