It's not every day that you wake up to find the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) toll-free helpline number saved in your phonebook by default, but Friday happened to be one such mysterious encounter for thousands of people in the country.
UIDAI has replaced the earlier helpline number -- 1800-300-1947 -- with the new number -- 1947, which got into people's phonebooks, apparently without their consent.
The Aadhaar body in its defense said that it has not asked any service provider or manufacturer to add the helpline number to users' smartphones.
