British Viceroy Lord Mountbatten transferred power to Pakistan on August 14, 1947, so that he could be present in New Delhi the next day for India's Independence Day celebrations. According to another theory, Pakistan decided to celebrate its Independence Day on August 14 as it coincided with the 27th day of Ramadan, an auspicious date of the Islamic lunar calendar.
