According to reports, 48-year-old Varsha Sharma from Rajasthan wanted to donate her kidney to her friend, an army officer. However, her decision was strongly opposed by her family members.
The woman was forced to sort it out at the Karnataka High Court. Sharma's family was opposed to the idea of unrelated organ transplant. After four months of persuasion, Sharma finally donated her kidney on Friday at Columbia Asia Hospital.
Reportedly, it was Anil Srivatsav, founder of Gift of Life Adventure Foundation and a kidney donor himself who encouraged Varsha to take up the issue at the court. Srivatsav hopes that Varsha's case would help make the state authorisation committee be more open to unrelated organ transplant.
Varsha is still recuperating at the hospital. She even lost 21 kg for the transplant. Varsha reportedly made her intentions clear in the court and strongly stated that she was doing it only for affection and not money.
