According to reports, PhD has been made mandatory for direct recruitment of assistant professors at the university-level from July 2021. The University Grants Commission (UGC) has also made PhD mandatory for promotion to the level of associate professor in colleges and assistant professor (Selection Grade) in universities.
Newly-recruited teachers will also go through a mandatory, month-long induction programme before starting work. Further, they have to devote two hours to mentoring of students for community development/extracurricular activities. While striking down the Academic Performance Indicator (API)-based appraisal, the government has introduced a simplified teacher evaluation grading system.
Teaching-centric parameters will be taken into account for promotions in colleges up to the level of associate professor, while teaching and research-centric metrics aid in promotions in universities.
