The petrol and diesel prices reportedly hit the highest level today since Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government took power in 2014. Following this, the oil ministry has reportedly sought a cut in excise duty. Reports say, petrol costs Rs 72.38 per litre and diesel Rs 63.20 per litre in Delhi, while in Chennai petrol costs Rs 75.06 and diesel costs Rs 66.64. Notably, the central government currently imposes an excise duty of Rs 19.48 per litre on petrol and Rs 15.33 per litre on diesel.
