Following recent reports that the Kerala State Commission for Scheduled Castes (SC) and Scheduled Tribes (ST) had issued a ban on the use of the word ‘Dalit’ in official communication, its Chairman P.N. Vijayakumar denied such reports and clarified that the official order to avoid the use of the word ‘Dalit’ and ‘Harijan’ was issued by National SC Commission in 2007, following which the State SC commission issued a circular to avoid using these words in 2008. Further, he clarified that there is no ban on the word ‘Dalit’.
