Reportedly, on June 26, the 32-year- old woman came out to buy groceries and during this period she went to the novelty shop to buy toys for her children. Her husband lodged a missing complaint with Tuling police in Nalasopara east after his wife did not return home.
The body of the victim was recovered on June 28 from a pick- up van which was parked in the road in Chandan Naka, Nalasopara (East). The post mortem report revealed that the woman had been strangled to death and sexual intercourse was performed on the body after she was dead.
The Vasai unit of the Palghar crime branch stepped in and took the investigation forward. They checked the CCTV footage of the area. During the interrogation, the owner of the pick-up van denied his involvement in the crime as the vehicle has been parked for several days.
Further investigation brought to light that the woman had an argument with the shop owner on June 26 over the price of a toy. Post the argument, the accused allegedly dragged the woman by her hair, took her to a room located behind the shop, strangled her and slit her neck. Following this the accused man had sex with the corpse.
The accused shopkeeper stayed along with the body till night and wrapped it in plastic before dumping it in the parked van. Murder charges have been pressed against the accused.
