MOTHER SELLS 13-DAY-OLD BABY GIRL FOR RS 1.10 LAKH; ARRESTED BY POLICE

In a shocking case being reported from the Vijayawada district of Andhra Pradesh, a woman sold her 13-day-old baby girl for Rs 1.10 lakh as she 'could not afford another daughter'.

According to a report in Deccan Chronicle, 22-year-old Nallapotual Sai Lakshmi, who is a mother of 2 girls, sold her baby girl to a couple. The town circle inspector, Murali Krishna said that the deal was signed when the woman got pregnant.

The couple deposited an amount of Rs 50,000 in each of Lakshmi's daughters' account and Rs 10,000 was paid as cash. The couple bought the daughter for their sister who did not have a baby for 17 years.

The matter came to light when an Anganwadi worker in the area noticed that Lakshmi was breastfeeding a baby earlier and noticed she wasn't seen again with it later. Reportedly, the worker then informed officials of the Integrated Child Development Services and the police authorities.

Police officials have registered a case against the mother and the couple who illegally bought the child. The infant has been handed over to Childline, a child welfare authority, the circle inspector told Deccan Chronicle.
