Satyapal Singh, Union Minister for Water Resource, River Development and Ganga Rejuvenation has reportedly suggested that Hindus stop the immersion of ashes in the Ganga to save the river from environmental damage. He was quoted as saying "People have beliefs, but it is the demand of today's time to revisit them. We must not do anything that affects the purity of the Ganga”. He also suggested that the ashes be buried and saplings be planted over it.
