In a sad and shocking case, a 75-year-old woman was locked up inside her house by her son in Balaramapuram of Thiruvananthapuram district.
The woman has been identified as Lalitha, who was rescued by the police and is currently in the intensive care unit of a private hospital in the city. She is suffering from liver cirrhosis and was allegedly denied proper medical treatment for the last few months.
According to the police, the senior citizen was staying with her younger son, who has been identified as Vijayakumar.
Later in the week, Lalitha’s daughter, L Jaya and neighbours decided to meet the woman but was not allowed. After repeated trials to enter the house, they informed the police about the situation.
While speaking to The News Minute, Balaramapuram Circle Inspector Binukumar said that, "When we went there, the compound gate and the house were locked. A few neighbours and the lady’s daughter were outside. Neighbours informed us that they used to hear the woman’s cries sometimes. Her son was not ready to open the door so we had to forcibly open it".
After opening the door, they were shocked to see the 75-year-old woman. She was lying in a locked room without proper clothing and there were also maggots in her wounds.
“She was in such a critical condition that we immediately shifted her to a hospital. There is a dispute in the family over money issues regarding Lalitha’s bank account which is also the reason,” Circle Inspector Binukumar added.
Meanwhile, Lalitha’s grandson Satheesh revealed more about the pathetic condition and situation, wherein he told TNM that her condition was still serious.
“My grandmother has Rs 15 lakh in her account, which was transferred to her after my grandfather’s death, but Vijayakumar wants to take all the money. There is a case going on in the court over this. He used to send us videos of her in which he forces her to walk and shouts at her,” Satheesh said.
During investigation, Satheesh also showed videos where Lalitha is seen being forced to walk and is seen sitting on the floor frequently out of tiredness. He also stated that Lalitha loses her memory at times.
Following the investigation and the woman's critical condition, Vijayakumar has been arrested and later let out on bail.
