Several hospitals were striving to receive the required dosages for prescribed individuals. In view of this, the Drug Controller General of India began approving other similar compound drugs to treat mild and moderate coronavirus patients.
In order to bridge the problem of lack of availability of drugs to people, Dr.Reddy’s Laboratories on Wednesday launched 'Avigam', a version of favipiravir (200 mg tablets) in India, This drug was approved by the Drugs Controller General of India. It has been priced at Rs.99 per tablet and is said to have a two-year shelf life.
Dr.Reddy’s has also made the required arrangements to ensure that these drugs are delivered to the homes of people in need across 42 cities in India.
According to a report published by Financial Express, the arrangement for global licensing with Fujifilm Toyama Chemical and Global Response Aid, grants Dr Reddy’s exclusive rights to manufacture, sell, and distribute this drug in the country.
However, the firm is currently importing the drug from Japan and hopes to obtain the DGCI’s permission to immediately commence manufacturing in India. “We plan to complete multi-centric trials on over 700 patients in the next few weeks and submit them to various global drug regulators,” said MV Ramana, CEO AT Dr Reddy’s. He added that the firm is currently in talks with several regulators to seek fast-track approval for Avigan.
At the launch, he announced that the firm is likely to launch its own brand of Remdesivir injection by September, for which the company signed a license pact with Gilded Sciences.
