DELHI ELECTION RESULT: INCREASE IN BIRYANI SALES; NETIZENS TROLL POLITICAL PARTIES
Home > News Shots > IndiaA rather unexpected event yesterday in Delhi was the sudden surge in sale of biryani. Confused much? Let’s break it down for you. As you might have been aware, the Aam Aadmi Party won the majority in the Delhi elections, the results of which was announced yesterday. Arvind Kejriwal is set to become the Chief Minister of Delhi for the third time.
In case, you recall, many BJP leaders including Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, had said that AAP was serving biryani to anti-Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) protesters at Shaheen Bagh, where protests have been going on for over 50 days now.
Soon enough, social media was flooded with netizens saying that they have ordered biryani to celebrate AAP’s victory.
“We have seen a higher uptake on our orders today, which looks to increase through the evening,” said Raymond Andrews, cofounder at Biryani Blues, a restaurant chain in Delhi. “Biryani as a cuisine is celebratory by nature, be it a birthday, an anniversary or friends celebrating,” he added.
Many restaurants also cashed in on the trend by giving out promotional offers. “We are doing a 1+1 (one-plus-one) on all biriyanis for delivery 6 PM and 10:30 PM today,” said Thomas Fenn, partner at Mahabelly, a south Indian restaurant at Saket. “We are seeing clear increase in biryani sales,” he added.
Vishal Jindal, co-founder of biryani and kebab chain Biryani by Kilo (BBK), said the chain is running a 25 per cent off promotional exercise. “Despite being a Tuesday, we are seeing a sales pickup,” he was quoted as saying.
All these instances have led to people wondering if the BJP is being trolled. “The Kejriwal government provides biryani to the people sitting at protest at Shaheen Bagh and other places,” Adityanath was earlier stated as saying.
