The ruling BJP government and the Congress are embroiled in a close fight in Madhya Pradesh, where Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan is seeking a record fourth term.
Trends from Madhya Pradesh have pushed the heartland state back into suspense. The BJP and the Congress are in a tight race for Madhya Pradesh as both parties have taken turns to come close to the halfway mark in this evenly fought contest. They need a majority mark of 116 in the 230-seat Assembly. If BJP manages to hold on to the state, it will be a face-saver for the saffron party on a day when a resurgent Congress has won the state of Rajasthan and Chhattisgarh.
With the sudden slump in electoral fortunes of the BJP, 2019 will no longer be a cakewalk for Prime Minister Narendra Modi and BJP chief Amit Shah.
Here are the trends in the state as of 03:12 PM. Going by them, the Congress is inching closer to claim the heart of India.
BJP: 100
Congress: 119
Others: 11
