CENTRE BACKED OFF ON HINDI IMPOSITION - DID YOU KNOW ON WHAT DAY IT HAS HAPPENED?

The Indian government has revised a controversial draft bill to make Hindi a mandatory third language to be taught in schools across the country. Shortly after the news broke out, it was met with strong opposition in the southern state of Tamil Nadu, which has always resisted the "imposition" of Hindi.

In 1965, it saw violent protests against a proposal that Hindi would be India's only official language. Tamil is one of the oldest languages and evokes a lot of pride in the state.

Centre has backed off and revised the draft to say Hindi would not be mandatory. The decision was made official on June 3, which also happens to be ex-DMK chief Dr. Karunanidhi's birthday.

He has always had a firm stand in opposing Hindi and even got arrested for it. His love for the Tamil language and his works are renowned.
