According to reports, as many as 6.83 lakh companies had Permanent Account Number but didn't file income tax returns for the assessment year 2016-17. Reportedly, the nation’s capital had the most number of such companies at over 1.44 lakh. Meanwhile, notices have been issued to enterprises that were prima facie not carrying out any business for a period of two immediately preceding fiscals and failed to file financial statements.
