The All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) has introduced a new rule for engineering colleges to maintain the teacher-student ratio at 1:20. The new rule has, however, become an excuse for colleges all over India to layoff teachers.
Reportedly, nearly 12,000 teachers were fired from colleges in Tamil Nadu. TN is a state with the most number of engineering institutes in the country. Teachers with more than 10 years of experience and earning more than Rs 40,000 are being sacked.
Teachers are reportedly finding it difficult to find a new job. AICTE officials in Chennai have reportedly refused to comment.
