The Information and Broadcasting Ministry is set to constitute a regulatory authority for private radio and televisions channels and for broadcasting code violations. With the new regulator, audiences will have a centralised mechanism to report violations. The I&B ministry has said the body is being formed in keeping with the Supreme Court’s direction. However, the move has raised concerns that the regulator would muzzle free speech.
