A report by The Hindu says, over 94% of cases registered under the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, 1989, across Tamil Nadu during the last six years have resulted in acquittals. Reportedly, of the total 1,934 cases registered under the Act in which judgments have been delivered between 2011 and 2016, only 108 cases have resulted in convictions.Lack of commitment on the part of law enforcing agencies in dealing with such cases and the inadequate representation of Dalits in the judiciary are pointed to be the reasons by legal experts.
