China's C-919 passenger plane takes off for maiden flight

China’s ambitious home-grown passenger aircraft C919 has completed its maiden flight, for about 90 minutes in the air, and landed safely back at Pudong airport in Shanghai. While China is ambitions to enter the global aviation market, the single-aisle twin-engine plane is designed to be a direct competitor to Boeing's 737 and the Airbus A320. With a capacity to seat up to 168 passengers, the aircraft will have a range of between 4,075 and 5,555km. Reportedly, it will cost around $50m, less than half of a Boeing 737 or Airbus A320.
