Housing and Urban Development Minister Udumalai K Radhakrishnan on Monday reportedly told the Assembly that the Chennai Metropolitan Area would be expanded to cover 8,878 sq km from its current 1,189 sq km. He reportedly said all of Kancheepuram and Tiruvallur districts, as well as Arakkonam taluk in Vellore district, would be part of the new CMA. The minister also reportedly stated that the move is aimed at countering the effect of increasing population in Chennai, regulating development in fast-growing suburban areas and creating infrastructure on a par with economic activities.
