The New Zealand Department of Conservation has reported that more than 400 pilot whales have been washed up onto a beach at Farewell Spit in the Golden Bay region on Friday. Over 100s of whales were already dead and volunteers are putting up huge efforts to refloat the live ones. The department added that this the third biggest wash up in the history of New Zealand.
