Protest against the Thoothukudi unit of Sterlite copper plants reached the 100-day mark on Tuesday. The 100th day, however, turned especially nasty for the protestors as the police opened gunfire on them. 11 died on Tuesday and the injured were admitted to the hospital. Wednesday saw even more gunfire and one died.
Even completing the 100-day mark has got the protests nowhere. Why are the people going so far to close an industry? What compels them to even sacrifice their lives?
