Cold Case is a horror investigation thriller, directed by debutant Tanu Balak and starring Prithviraj and Aditi Balan in the lead roles. Written by Sreenath V Nath, Cold Case is shot by Gireesh Gangadharan.

A crime thriller, spun around a horror setting, the film involves the investigation of a complex murder by a journalist, Medha Padmaja (Aditi Balan) and ACP M Sathyajith (Prithviraj). The crime that has shaken the entire state affects Medha’s life as she moves to a new rental house that has a demonic possession. What happens when both try to unravel the mystery and where it takes them forms the rest of the plot.

Cold Case is technically ace and gets you involved with its fine making and moving screenplay. Among the best things about the film are the details and the scientific nuances. The writer has sunk his teeth into the forensic and the scientific processes that help dissect a case. Kudos to that effort.

Though the film has fine cinematography and minute details to keep you hooked, it gets itself into trouble with clichés common to thrillers. The supporting cast could have been better. The twist vis-à-vis the antagonist wasn’t exciting and the pivotal point of the climax could have been much better.

Besides the lead actors, the cast includes Lakshmi Priya Chandramouli and Anil Nedumangad. Though the cast was promising, their characterizations could have been stronger for the desired impact.

Gireesh Gangadharan’s cinematography is a big save for this flick. It is one of the ropes that tries to save this flick from falling off the cliff. With his frames, he has poured in the right emotions and tone, making the viewers ready for the next scene. The colour tones work well, though more of the spooky lights and colouring could have helped with the film’s total appearance.

Sreejith V Nath’s screenplay is moving and keeps a hold. But the credits go to not writing exactly, but the technical department. The film is held together by its engaging visuals and story treatment. The premise missed out on an innovative thought and is not impressive enough, ergo making it an average plot.

Tanu Balak’s directorial debut is a decent attempt that can be appreciated for its making and research.
