The official trailer of actor Vijay's Bigil promises a lot of sporting action, whilst embedding the tale of an underdog story about a coach's tryst with the upliftment of a female football team. Directed by Atlee, Bigil is produced by Kalpathi S. Aghoram under the banner AGS Entertainment.
Starting with glimpses of our protagonist's entry as a star footballer (who plays for the Tamil Nadu football association), Bigil's trailer directly establishes the friction between coach Michael (played by Vijay) and a player (Indhuja) of his football team. The sports-drama aspect runs parallel to the introduction of the elderly Royappan (also played by Vijay), who seems to be surrounded by assasins at a dhobi-khana.
Bigil trailer is packed with a homages from Vijay's previous films, from Nayanthara's character asking 'whether he has forgotten Kadhalukku Mariyadhai' to younger Vijay, to his 'chiclet-flick', a trademark style used in the director's very own Theri, which also starred Vijay in the lead.
By watching the trailer, one can say that the film does feature Vijay in a double role. For instance, take the scene where Kathir vents his frustration to a person (who might be Royappan) while younger Vijay looks at him. Apart from rousing moments that showcases the superstar in a massy avatar, Bigil also puts the female footballers (or the Singappenneys of the film) at its forefront, as the snippet packs a well-cut montage that presents their individual conflicts.
The colour palette presents a mix of saturated colours (the sports portions), warmly-lit, high contrast exteriors (the scenes taking place in Royappan's den) with a liberal usage of primary colours (for example, the training sequence). Nayanthara plays the the love interest while Yogi Babu, Vivekh provide comic relief. AR Rahman's background score reserves heavy music for the massy moments whilst subtly underscoring at the poignant, breezy moments. Overall, Bigil's trailer adds more to the film's anticipation factor.
