After a long wait, Mammootty’s period-drama ‘Mamangam’ will be released on Thursday (December 12). The bilingual-movie is set in the 15th and 16th centuries of Kerala, when Zamorins ruled Calicut. The film is based on a religious festival, held once every 12 years at Thirunavaya, on the banks of Bharathapuzha in Kerala.
In an interview to Behindwoods Ice, M. Padmakumar, director of ‘Mamangam’ said, he did the work that was assigned to him. “I don’t want to talk about controversies (surrounded by the movie). I was assigned a work and I did it with full responsibility,” the director said. He also made it clear that he can’t do a movie to entertain all types of audience.
Before ‘Mamangam’, Padmakumar had earlier directed ‘Parunthu’ with Mammootty. Speaking about the ace actor, the director said, Mammootty was like a big brother to him. He also said that, most of the people in Kerala knows about the story of ‘Mamangam’ and it can’t be compared with ‘Baahubali’.
Elaborating more about the movie, he said, it was a different canvas altogether — the costumes, the location — all were different. “I had a doubt on how I can shoot the movie with perfection, but I had many people around me to help me”, Padmakumar said. “The story of Mamangam is not fiction, its based on historic references and we have tried to shoot the film well,” he said.
‘Mamangam’ is produced by Venu Kunnappily under the banner of Kavya Film Company and the adapted screenplay is written by Shankar Ramakrishnan.
