I AM PREGNANT MOVIE REVIEW
A young couple, opposite each other, diving into their supper. A spiceless life. Even their conversation this time is muted with dialogues running in the background. About them being childless for five years and the obvious pressure from the mother-in-law or should we say monster-in-law? Even in the way, they handle their cutlery, we get snapshots of a modern, elite couple.
They withdraw for the night but Anshika (Zinnia Ranji) miraculously finds herself with a pregnant! tummy in the morning! Even while they could debate what’s happening, arrive the mil and the sister-in-law and the gentle, at times not so gentle prodding comes, some of it at the earshot of the poor woman! She has been trying for years and how did she end up being pregnant overnight!
With doubts about her being unfaithful to her better half comes into the conflict, an enraged MIL proceeds to stab her DIL or so it appears. Debabrat Samal’s short film is effective and drives home the point that a lady is the best-appointed authority of what she needs to do with her body or put it through.
Speaking of the performances, lead actress Zinnia Ranji emotes a gamut of feelings, with Karan Arora playing the perfect foil with his restraint. The SIL (Riju Jain) and MIL (Sheetal Desai) characters, are as usual, the stereotypes of anti-DIL and don't inspire a lot of reaction, in any case successful with their malevolence.
Vikas Vasudevan (photography) has spun magic with the limited canvas and so is Harsh Hede with his cuts. Considering the entire story moves within the confines of a house and revolves around limited characters, the production values are adequate, so is the music (Sanjay Dass), thankfully not going OTT. One of the numerous delights of short content on OTT platforms.
I am pregnant streams on Disney-Hotstar.
