Watching
VTV, the feeling was one of complete involvement.
A simple movie beautifully directed and
scripted, which sticks truthfully to the
story in every frame. Given such a simple
and often told storyline, I don't think
any director can sustain the interest
of the audience. The wonders Gautham works
onscreen along with Cinematographer Manoj
Paramahansa is written all over. Watching
the magic build between Jessi and Karthik
on screen was wonderful. Never at any
moment did you get a false feeling in
the proceedings. The music and its picturization
blended beautifully with the flow of the
movie and that’s truly amazing for
it to happen in a Tamil movie.
But there were some false points though
- for instance, Jessi bluntly refusing
to marry right at the middle of her wedding
ceremony. We know Jessi is a conservative
Christian and the character does not show
the emotions and pain she undergoes to
make such a tough decision. She just bluntly
refuses, which is just not true to her
sensitivities.
The scenes in the movie where Gautham
Menon makes fun of himself of saying "Gautham
Menon- who? The guy who takes years to
make a movie and that too full of English
dialogues" are real good! And...The
streak of heroism in Silambarasan comes
out with full force in the fight scenes....guess
you need to have some of it in his movies.

And, I don’t think there's much need to rave
about the performances of the lead characters. You
put any body in their places and I'm sure the performances
would be at least as good. But yes, needless to mention,
a very realistic portrayal and the director certainly
deserves lion’s share of the credit.
A lot has been written about the climax, calling it
a tragedy. Movies like Kaakha - Kaakha or 7G rainbow
colony are real tragedies. VTV is not a tragedy...may
be its just as real as life gets.
So a simple, oft told love story with good script,
screenplay and stunning Cinematography. But what's
special?
Where VTV really moves to the next level is just because
of the one man - Rahman. This is a musical -an A.R.Rahman
and Gautham musical. Just for you. The last time I
heard such a musical from Rahman was a decade ago,
back in those Taal, Alaipaayuthe, Dil-Se days. The
songs in VTV are just Mind Blowing to say the least.
They drive you crazy. Hosanna was exhilarating. Oomana
penne - melodious and as sweet as all the honey in
the world.
And....once you watched the movie I don’t think
you can ever stop listening to Mannipaaya. This one
will certainly haunt the mind for a long long time
to come.
VTV is all about the realities of lives of many people
- Gautham Menon (he married a Mallu Syrian Christian),
Silambarasan and also the realities of lakhs of people
watching it. The realities of life translating into
a simple and truthful movie. It’s a wonderful
feeing - a longing, a pain but one which will definitely
make you fall in love again. Soar the Skies!
