Suriya
is riding on a big success wave with a
hat trick of hits, and make no mistake,
that wave is just going to get bigger
with SINGAM. Right from the first frame
the film travels at such an outrageous
level of breakneck speed that you are
literally left gasping for breath.
Duraisingam (Suriya), an honest sub inspector
posted in a local police station in Thoothukkudi
unwittingly gets on the wrong side of
an underworld mafia boss (Prakash Raj)
operating in Chennai, and ends up humiliating
him in the process. Enraged he gets Singam
transferred to Chennai, his kingdom, to
show his power and take revenge, only
to realize the fallacy of his action later
on.
Let us be clear, what we have at hand
is a film overridden with clichés
- the usual song and dance routines, punch
dialogues, hero worship and villains with
more brawn than brain, but you got to
hand it to Suriya. The man literally breathes
fire into corn! Be it those high octane
clashes with the villain where he needs
to be all rough and tough, flex his muscles
and scream his lungs out or those breezy
romantic interludes where he needs to
switch over to lover boy mode and talk
with his eyes, it's all too easy for him.
What an actor this man is!
Talking about acting it would be foolish
to leave out Prakash Raj who has turned
in a simply delightful performance. Will
we ever get bored of his loony villainy?

Of course no movie will work purely on strength of
the hero's performance and hence the screenplay here
plays a big part in delivering to us one of the finest
time pass flicks of the summer(mind you, not just
this summer). The speed of the film numbs your mind
and blocks out all logical reasoning capabilities,
helping you overlook some loose ends and over the
top stunts. Thankfully, not only do the romantic sequences
gel well into the narrative, providing a welcome distraction,
they also seem believable to a large extent which
is a rarity in such potboilers.
The songs are at best, passable and the background
score, much less. This is one of the reasons why the
film does not manage to better director Hari's earlier
cop flick SAAMI, another reason being, an irritating
and insipid comedy track.
So what if we've seen it all before? Will we ever
be able to do without our beloved Genre Benders that
shamelessly entertain?
VERDICT: - OH BOY, THIS LION CAN ROAR!
