I think Vijay doesn't want to experiment his potential. He has become an out and out commercial actor right from the days of "Ghilli". And, now this Diwali comes yet another Vijay fare - "Velayutham". Being an ardent fan of Vijay's "Kaavalan", I was keen on checking out "Velayutham" but my hopes were shattered and banged on the ground. The normal saga of a village man turning vigilante has been the core of most of his movies. Well, Velayutham was an amalgamation of all his movies, with the sister-sentiment an exact replica of "Thirupachi". As always Santhanam is the comic relief. You can't say you need more from him. Whatever he gives is enough to tickle the rib. Secondly, after the lackluster performance in the dim-wit "Mapillai" and the crazy-driven "Engeyum-Kaadhal", I thought Hansika would deliver here, but she was more of a skin show rather than acting. Her only job was to flaunt her navel to the audience. Stupid! Idiotic! Thirdly, Genelia is paired with Vijay for the second time after "Sachin". She certainly scores as the journalist. Her emotions are pretty cute and lovely to watch. She certainly deserves special mention. Now, last of all, I come to Ilaya Thalapathi Vijay. Earlier he used to fight just as a plain guy bashing up hundreds of rowdies. Here, the treatment slightly differs, he wears a superhero suit, similar to the one in "Assasin's Creed" and the fight ensues. Certainly the movie will be a Diwali Hit, and will cater to all sections of the audience, but it never really shows his true acting. Disappointment! Truly! The songs are good and the "Mulachu Moonu" number stands atop among the rest for its eye-catching visuals and a refreshing melody amidst a burst of fight sequences. The first half is delight to watch especially for its blend of humor and action, but the second half slips to predictability and hence becomes another Usual Vijay Fare. I just expected better from Vijay. Prithvi Kanth pritz.bhas@gmail.com
