I'm writing this article in response
to Mr. JK Arasan's "WHY KAMAL SIR
SHOULD NOT?" column. I would
rather call it rant, or the frustrations
of a fan, which I do understand. However,
this part irked me to no end:
"Secondly, we have ARR, Yuvan and
Harris. All knows the market value of
these music directors then why Shankar,
Ehsaan & Loy? Did they give any
hits in Tamil? Were the songs of Aalavanthan
great hits? Why Kamal not working
with great personalities of our Tamil
cinema like Shankar, ARR etc. What ego
is that?"
I find that extremely insulting. First
things first, why do you care what their
market value is? The producer of the
movie is to decide where to spend his
money, he's knows what he's doing.
Secondly, Shankar, Ehsaan & Loy
are arguably the second most critically
acclaimed musicians after the maestro
himself in mainstream Bollywood cinema.
For the record, their top selling albums,
for your info, are (no of albums sold
in India alone in brackets): Kal Ho
Naa Ho (23,00,000), Dil Chahta Hai (20,00,000)
Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna (20,00,000),
Bunty Aur Babli (19,00,000), Salaam
E Ishq (16,50,000), Don (15,00,000),
Jhoom Barabar Jhoom (15,00,000), Rock
On (12,00,000). There are more, but
you can find it for yourself. Let me
know how Yuvan and Harris do in
comparison.
Your next question - "Were the
songs of Aalavandhan great hits?"
- Actually, yes. The album sold 2,00,000
copies within six hours of its release.
Even if it didn't that was one of their
first films, the pre- Dil chahta Hai
days. I would be surprised if anyone
sold albums like hot cake unless it's
a Roja.
And let’s not even discuss about
critically acclaimed albums, and awards
won. Wikipedia is your friend.
Of course, Kamal could work with A.R
Rahman and the likes, but your accusations
regarding S-E-L are ridiculous and from
ignorance. Please do some research
before posting such articles in public
domain.
