Santhanam the actor, started his career as a junior artist in movies.
Then, he moved to small screen where he did TV shows like 'TEA KADAI BENCH' in WIN TV and shows like 'SAGALAI vs RAGALAI', 'PITCHAATHIPATHI' in JAYA TV.
Later, He did 'Lollu Sabha' directed by RAM BALA in 'VIJAY TV', which was a huge success. 'Lollu Sabha' made a great fan following for Santhanam, especially for his witty and timing dialogues.

Actor Silambarasan gave him a break in his career by taking him into the Silver Screen, in his film 'Manmadhan'. Santhanam attracted everyone in the first film itself and his comedy was a great plus for the movie 'Manmadhan'.

Then, he did a series of movies like Sachin, February 14, Idhaya Thirudan, Rendu, Anbae Aaruyire which didn’t do well.

Santhanam gradually started increasing his fan base by his unforgettable comedies in the movies like Sillunu Oru Kadhal, Pollathavan, Santhosh Subramaniam. But after the movie 'SMS' (Siva Manasula Sakthi), he almost gained a STAR status and a lot of fans.

In the following 2 years.... He acted in films like Vaamanan, Kandein Kadhalai, BOSS Engira Bhaskaran, Siruthai, Deiva Thirumagal which had awesome comedy scenes. With whomever Santhanam acts, it may be Arya, Jeeva, Vishal, Simbhu, Dhanush, Jai, Karthi or anyone else it becomes a great comedy combo in the screen. In 2010, He also acted with Superstar in the movie 'Endhiran'. From the movie 'BOSS Engira Bhaskaran', the combination of Santhanam-Rajesh became a great one. The words that Santhanam uses in the movie like 'NANBEN DA', 'APPATAKKAR' became a viral hit, which every youngster using while talking to others.

Later,  his seniors Vivek and Vadivelu started giving less number of movies, which made all producers approach Santhanam. 'Vaigai Puyal' Vadivelu who held the No.1 position in Tamil cinema for the past 10 years, stopped acting in Tamil movies from MAY 2011, due to the political crisis in the TN elections and his election canvas supporting DMK. All these factors and Santhanam's unique comedy style with 'Goundamani' style of counter dialogues and his continuous hits have made him the 'COMEDY SUPERSTAR' today.
Even, directors like Gautham Menon who never casts a separate comedy actor in their film, wishes to have Santhanam in their film  (Neethaane En Ponvasantham).

Today, people watch films like 'Oru Kal Oru Kannaadi', 'Saguni', 'Kalakalappu' just for the sake of Santhanam. These films managed to make success at the box office, because of Santhanam's presence in the film.
And, these days directors have just started writing scripts keeping Santhanam, in mind.

But, this is also the period where Santhanam has to be more careful in avoiding stereo type comedies and reduce his usual double meaning comedies to hold this 'Superstar' position strongly.

Other than that, undoubtedly Santhanam is the busiest actor in Kollywood.
