Neerparavai - third film from Seenu Ramasamy ,who won three National awards for his Thenmaerku Paruvakaatru, sets expectations among Tamil Cinema fans . His previous movie was much noted for the story, nativity and casting. Does Neerparavai meet/exceed /lag the expectation level?
The director in the very beginning scores high for plotting the story around a rarely seen community on Tamil films, dealing with their life, emotions, thoughts, standard of living and their much debated national issues. The whole movie is pinned with the romance between the leads ,however the movie travels wide and makes it a melodrama genre rather being a usual romance .The movie moves at snail's pace and the director has ensured he maintains the same pace throughout the movie giving the viewers the climate of above said melodrama.
The biggest strength of Neerparavai is its characterization and perfect casting that includes Nandita Das,Saranya Ponnvannan,Anupama Kumar ,Samuthirakani,Thambi Ramaiah,Pandi,Azhagam Perumal,Vadivukarasi,Arul Das .However it is Pooram as hero's father who steals the show in acting, hats off to the unnoticed actor, hope this movie wins him recognition and award for the best supporting role . All casts in the movie will impress the viewers in one scene or the other. The script as a whole talks more about the relationships and their values among the roles, let that be the relationship between Vishnu-his parents or heroine-Anupama Kumar or Vadivukarasi-her son .The director again scores in the scene where the father offers a fish (all that he could offer) to the doctor and thanking him for recovering his son from being a alcoholic. It is evident from the movie that the director has lived in each of the roles without which one cannot portray all the roles in depth and impressive.
All the casts in the movie have done it perfectly, the team as a whole deserves hats off. Though the lead pairs have done a good job it is worth mentioning that the other casts that include Pooram, Saranya, Thambi Ramaiah, and Azhagam Perumal have given an excellent performance. On technical aspects, the backbone of the movie is Balasubramaniem's camera. Excellent camera work in showing the sea and shades on the shores, a visual treat not to be missed.
On the downside, the background scoring is nowhere to the movie standard and should have been much better. The scenes that are high in emotions are pulled down with a poor background score. The whole movie is narrated as a flash black which looks cinematic .And in the very beginning Vishnu's role is defined as "one equal to god" and "man who has learnt life" , however the story/his role doesn’t support these dialogues. This could have been avoided as it sets expectations and leaves us unjustified on these description .Though Samuthirakani's dialogues are thought provoking, those scenes looks like they are intentionally brought in at regular intervals in a tea shop...in short they don’t come along with the story naration. The whole story is built around the romance between the leads, but the romance part fails to impress as a whole.
Neerparavai may not impress a masala movie lover but for the rest it is definitely worth a watch for its plot, charectistaion, camera and castings. The movie has ample rooms and streams to grab the awards for this year however this "Seabird" could have flown much higher and wider having focused on the above said let-downs.
