It was a mere shock when Ghajini (Hindi) was the first film to surpass 100 crores some four years ago, that how could a Bollywood film do such a roaring business. Since then many films joined the elite 100 crore club. With Jab Tak Hai Jaan joining the list it has no more become a milestone. Sixteen films have garnered more than hundred crores. This is something which is very good for the Bollywood film industry and its next target would be 200 crores. The primary reason behind their success is their marketing and promotions in advance and the second is well known that Hindi is spoken all over the nation.

My worry is that why could not South Indian movies gross over 100 crores at a regular basis? It could be done only if a movie has really good content and it should be well received in other states too. It was an official statement by S.S.Rajamouli that Eega has grossed about 93 crores which is brilliant for a film made with a budget of about 40 crores with no star power. This was possible only when the movie was lapped by the audiences in Tamil Nadu too where it grossed nearly 20 crores. If the Hindi version of Eega would have been a solo release with proper marketing, who knows it would have grossed over 100 crores. Let’s take a look at movies which did good business in other states too. Endhiran, Dasavatharam, Shivaji, Padayappa, Avvai Shanmugi, Anniyan, Indian, Kadhalan are some movies which did roaring business in Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh where major share of revenue comes from. Let’s hope that our South Indian movies makes it big someday and we have 100 crore club over here too!
