To
the readers of Behindwoods,
I am a Tamil-speaking Singaporean, currently
residing in Vancouver, Canada. Recently,
I have been following the news about Asin's
(the Indian film actress) visit to Sri
Lanka for the shoot of her latest film
'Ready' and how it has angered some parties.
I am also shocked to read the decision
taken by Nadigar Sangam and FeTNA to ban
all her future movies from being screened
in South India and North America.
As an ardent fan of Asin, I'm really upset
by the decision taken by the bodies. As
we all know, 'Ready' was originally planned
to be shot in Mauritius. A last minute
decision taken by the producers of the
film caused to the film's location to
be changed to Sri Lanka. Asin, having
already signed the contract, did voice
her concerns to the producers but it was
all in vain. As an actress she had no
say in the matter. In terms of her contract
she had to act wherever the location is.
It was unfair therefore to penalize her
for this. However, she did understand
the sentiments of the Tamil people and
did not attend even the International
Indian Filmfare Awards (IIFA) held earlier
in Colombo, Sri Lanka, even though she
got the invitation to attend the event.
Asin said that she respected the appeal
by Nadigar Sangam in Tamil Nadu and had
refrained from going to Colombo for IIFA
ceremony.
In Sri Lanka, Asin established a Trust
and

organized two humanitarian projects aimed at helping
the affected Tamil people in the North. One was to
conduct special eye clinics and the other was adopting
or sponsoring orphaned children. 150 children ranging
from age one to sixteen were sponsored or adopted
by Asin’s trust in the “Sevana”
home at Vavuniya. A three day eye clinic was conducted
in Jaffna and Vavuniya hospitals. Five medical doctors
were brought down from India at Asin’s expense.
Over 300 surgeries were performed in Jaffna and around
100 in Vavuniya. Spectacles costing 5,000 rupees each
were provided by Asin. There is a waiting list of
4,000 requiring eye surgeries and Asin says she will
bear the cost. According to a source, the children
warmed to Asin and began chatting eagerly. They called
her “Akka”. Many started crying when she
was leaving and implored her to stay longer. Sadly,
her charitable gesture is also criticized by some
extremists in Tamil Nadu. The reason being that she
was accompanied by the First Lady of Sri Lanka, Shiranthi
Rajapaksa, labeling the actress as 'The Ambassador
of Rajapaksa' and the 'Indian Agent'.
Meanwhile, Asin said that she could not help appearing
with the wife of President of Sri Lanka as it was
a matter of protocol and she could not do anything
about it. People who can think will understand why
she had gone to Sri Lanka in the first place. Asin
believes she has been only professional when she went
to shoot for the film Ready in Sri Lanka along with
the team. I feel anyone can politicize and turn things
to their own interests but this lone girl had gone
there to support a cause for the people. She has not
gone to support terrorism, she had simply gone to
do her job and also seeing the plight of Tamil people
there she decided to help them. While she is being
opposed by some in Tamil Nadu, she's a hero among
Sri Lankan Tamils, where none of her ignorant critics
have taken efforts to ease the burden of those people
other than to hurl insults at Asin and barring Indians
from visiting the island.
I truly believe and hope that the members of FeTNA
and the Nadigar Sangam will consider lifting off the
ban on screening Asin's movies in South India and
North America after reading this. PLEASE DON'T DRAG
POLITICS INTO CINEMA INDUSTRY.
Thanks to Behindwoods.com for highlighting this matter.
